Earth Day is Every Day!
Gould Academy will celebrate its annual Earth Day on Friday, April 22, with a full day of experiential learning academic programming. During the day students will break into their Advisory Groups and choose from three Group 1 Workshops and three Group 2 Workshops (listed below).
Earth Day 2016 Workshop Descriptions
Group 1 Workshops
A. Does it Make Sense? Lose your mind and come to your senses.
B. Scavenger Hunting. Hunt what you want, take what you need, and learn what you like.
C. Wandering Individualism. Be a voice, not an echo.
D. Sauntering Aimlessly. Not all who wander are lost.
E. Building the Universe. Create a mandala.
F. Transcending Yoga and Meditation. A gentle yoga session guides connections with nature.
G. A Blind Date. Can you see without your sight?
H. Illustrating Transcendentalism. Nature rubbings and illustration capture Transcendentalism.
I. Hinthunt. Go on a journey to discover the hints of great Transcendentalists.
Group 2 Workshops
J. Choose Wisely. This workshop explores how the everyday choices you make, like leaving the lights on, add up.
K. The Future of Winter in Maine. This workshop focuses on the past, present, and future of winter in Maine. We’ll explore the impact of climate change and what we can do about it.
L. Energy Bingo. Students will get informed about why it is important to conserve energy while enjoying a friendly game of Bingo.
M. Where Have All the Glaciers Gone? Explore the topic of climate change by looking at the melting of glaciers and the rise in sea level.
N. Plastic Bottles Afterlife. According to Postconsumers.com, plastic water bottles can take anywhere between 400 and 1,000 years to decompose. This workshop gives plastics a second life through snazzy ways to reuse your plastic drink bottle.
O. Driving Guilt Free. An automotive buyer’s guide for the environmentally conscious.
P. Posterized Plastics. Learn about the impact of single use plastics. Then create posters to raise awareness about reducing their use.
Q. Here Comes the Sun. Learn about solar energy at Gould, present and future.
R. Another One Bites the Crust. Come find out the differences between organic and processed foods and learn about the processing behind our foods.
S. Trashion. Need a new tie for formal dinner? A dress for Spring Fling? Come make clothes out of old magazines and newspapers in this interactive workshop.
T. Down the Drain. This workshop focuses on nonpoint source pollution; its impact on rivers, streams, and lakes, and what you can do to prevent it.
U. Plug it In! A look at electric cars of today and tomorrow.
V. Upcycle Projects: Making Reusable Grocery Bags from T-shirts. This workshop will provide an experience in creating something very useful while making an effort to limit waste in daily life.
