I do not think I am alone when I say I have been disappointed that it has taken this long for the temperatures to climb past 50 f. The mild winter teased us throughout the dark months of February and March with warmer than average temps but it has taken too long for the weather to stabilize! Enough is enough, enough is enough. I am ready to put the hats and gloves away for good! I know my kids are happy to be running around the yard and playground without the added bulk of snow pants, jackets, neckies, mittens, hats, and boots. I have also noticed that students around campus are shedding layers…. be careful – remember there is still a dress code. When you really want to wear the crop top, save it for the weekend. When you want to wear those shorts, save them for a sunnier day. When you are about to put on that comfortably broken in t-shirt, think about your excuse when you are confronted by Mrs. Manning. Remember, enjoying the sunshine and keeping it classy are not necessarily opposing ideas.
And for nothing else you may want to keep your skin covered because the cicadas are coming! The cicadas are coming! As described in Exodus 10:5, “And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail, and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field” (Andrews). If you have never experienced a cicada bloom, you are in for a treat – the sound is the most invasive part of the bloom on human daily life, “Technically cicadas don’t bite or sting; they do however pierce and suck. They might try to pierce and suck you, but don’t worry, they aren’t Vampires nor are they malicious or angry — they’re just ignorant and think you’re a tree. Just remove the cicada from your person, and go about your business. Cicadas also have pointy feet, egg-laying parts (ovipositors) and other sharp parts that might feel like a bite” (Cicada Mania). Needless to say, you do not want to mistaken for a tree, so stay covered up! But, since this insect invasion only happens to this extent every 17 years, you can save some of those cute spring outfits for next year – for now invest in coveralls!
If you really want to get the full experience of the Cicada phenomenon travel to the southern Atlantic states, they will have a lot of molting and mating bugs to contend with!
