Hi, Glogland! It’s me. I know, its been a while, but I’m back. See?

I’ve been VERY busy for the past…oh, I don’t know, 24 years? But that doesn’t explain my recent absence. Maybe this does:

I was kidnapped by pirates.

Yup, goin’ with that.

Well, I thought I’d share with you all what I’ve been up to. I’m right in the middle of directing Gould’s spring production of High School Musical, a show that looks just slightly awkwardly like Grease! (which I directed last year). Except with a much better message than “If you want to be happy in life, forget who you are and be someone that other people will like.”

Such an uplifting moral for a high school play.

Anyways, the play is going well except for the songs that are running through my head day and night. And I thought that maybe some of you out there experiencing recent Hypogloggia would like to hear some of what goes on in a play rehearsal. Here, I’ve compiled a list of the top ten rules for directing a high school play. These are the rules that I live by when producing the next great theatrical endeavor:

  1. Avoid the use of glitter whenever possible.
  2. Let at least one cast member run down the aisle.
  3. Remember that students will, 9 times out of 10, come up with better ideas than you.
  4. Find a competent student stage manager, and never let her graduate (sorry Ani!!).
  5. K.I.S.S (“Keep It Simple, Stupid”).
  6. Make students wear shoes at all time.
  7. The technical director is always right. always.
  8. Use jazz hands. The audience likes them.
  9. Always let parents bring in snacks for the cast and crew.
  10. Ban cell phones on day 1.
  11. Remember to keep banning cell phones on day 2.
  12. Have fun- it’ll be over in 7 weeks!

Until next week!!
(Unless the pirates get me again)
