The Athletes of the Month for April are Helen French ’19, who snowboarded to the top of the podium at the USASA Nationals, and Eddie Kaftan ’19 whose hurling and hitting has been leading the Huskies baseball team this spring.
Helen French ’19
Snowboarding
Helen closed out the 2018 snowboard season at the USASA National Championships at Copper, CO representing the USASA Maine Mountain Series as the Junior Women’s (16-17) Boardercross (BX) regional champion. Helen was the 2nd fastest qualifier at the Championship but never trailed in any of her 4-rider heats and won the big final handily to claim the National Championship for her age group. This finish also scored French an invite to the US Ski and Snowboard Team Project Gold, a development camp for outstanding junior athletes.
Eddie Kaftan ’19
Baseball
From Head Baseball Coach Rob Manning:
“Eddie recently pitched a complete game which was the key to our first win the year. Besides his great work on the mound, he’s also currently hitting over .400. He’s a team leader, the hardest worker in practice, and he sets an excellent example for his teammates. Every opposing coach we have faced has commented on what a good ballplayer he is.”
Thank you Helen and Eddie for being two standout examples of what it is to be a successful student-athlete at Gould!
