Like many other leading-edge companies, the IDEAS Center at Gould Academy responded and utilized its state of the art Digital Fabrication capabilities to help fight COVID-19 through 3D Design. With a huge and sudden shortage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), protective face shields were in huge demand.
Using a globally shared design, the 3D Printers at Gould have been running constantly producing a face shield holder that uses a readily available sheet protector. We have been distributing these face shields to local health care providers since March.
3D Design and Printing is becoming ever more relevant as a 21st Century Learning Skill. Being able to produce face shields during this historic pandemic is a perfect example. It has extensive applications in medicine, manufacturing, science, and is the prototyping tool of choice. All students should have the opportunity to explore this technology.
3D Design and Printing is just one of the amazing electives offered in the IDEAS Center at Gould. Students develop skills using an industry level 3D CAD program, then watch their designs become real objects through 3D Printing. The class is offered in the Fall and Spring trimesters at Gould.
