In addition to some new employees, a number of returning faculty will take on new roles for the coming year. Here’s a quick overview:
Director of Advising and Wellness
Katie Stack is taking on an important leadership role over the Gould advising system and the advising/counseling team. She will match students and advisors, develop an advisory curriculum, and oversee Gould’s Advising Team leaders who keep a careful watch on student wellness.
Humanities Teacher and Teaching Librarian
Sara Shifrin will teach 9th grade Humanities and direct the Sanborn Family Library. Also, as director of Gould’s Seminar program, she will provide needed leadership for Gould’s program of social-emotional wellness, college counseling, and Four Point preparation.
Associate Registrar
Tim Whiton is stepping into this important role and will assist in the development of the academic schedule and student course selections.
Academic Dean of Winter Term
Courtney Cook will lead the academic component of the On-Snow Winter Term Program.
And now for the New Employees…
Director of Health Services
Olivia Hendry works in collaboration with the health services team to provide the best care for day and boarding students. She holds a BSN with RN license and certifications in BLS, ACLS, and PALS. Her past experience includes working as a resource nurse for the O.R. at a community hospital for the past five years. She has helped inside and outside of the O.R. on a variety of staff development and performance improvement projects. will coordinate assessments, and the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Student Health Services at Gould Academy. She will develop, maintain, and revise school health policies and procedures as necessary in collaboration with the Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning.
She is excited to join a community where students are offered a blended learning environment so their individual needs are met. Her passions outside of work include spending time in the mountains hiking, continuing her education, and yoga.
Associate Director of College Counseling
Maggie Davis will serve as part of the College Counseling team to support students and their families in pursuit of attaining their higher education goals. This work extends throughout the Academy to advisors, teachers, coaches, and educational consultants.
Executive Assistant to the Head of School
Lindsay Legare has spent more than 15 years in social services and nonprofit management in the greater Boston area. She is a graduate of Syracuse University and grew up on the Connecticut shoreline. She lives in Stoneham, Maine with her wife Michelle. She enjoys all four seasons in Western Maine by skiing, hiking, and kayaking.
Associate of Admission/Director of Financial Aid
A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Tim Mannix comes to us after after two years as a mathematics teacher and basketball coach at Springfield Central High School. Prior to that, he coached basketball at the collegiate level (St. John’s University, Iowa State University) and worked and coached at the prep school level (Wilbraham and Monson Academy). He lives in Davidson Hall and enjoys traveling, lifting weights, fishing, and watching football in his downtime.
Admissions & Advancement Associate
Casey Morey is originally from Glastonbury, Connecticut, and graduated from Saint Andrews in Barrington, Rhode Island, where he was on the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. He went on to attend the University of Maine at Farmington to earn a degree in business psychology and a ski industries certificate with a focus on snow coaching. At UMF, he played lacrosse and coached snowboarding at Sugarloaf. He enjoys skateboarding, snowboarding, and hiking—anything that gets him outdoors and moving! He will live in Holden with his very friendly lab, Charlie.
Admissions & Advancement Associate
Mrs. Garfield brings extensive experience working in education as a school counselor and holds a Vermont Level II Professional Educator’s License Endorsement for K-12 School Counselors. She worked at Dothan Brook Elementary School in White River Junction, Vermont, where she was instrumental in designing and implementing a nationally recognized comprehensive school counseling program to improve achievement, attendance, and discipline and close achievement and opportunity gaps. She has been a PBIS instructional practice coach, high school counselor, class advisor, teacher mentor, kindergarten teacher, and Yogakids instructor. She and her family enjoy the experiential learning and outdoor recreation and opportunities that Gould and Bethel have to offer. She lives in Bethel with her husband, Brian, and their three children — Maia ’20, Phoebe ’22, and Zachary.
Controller
Lynn Wilson has lived in Bethel for over 15 years, working most of that time as the business manager at the Bethel Inn Resort. She also has a bookkeeping company working with small businesses and doing tax returns. A Maine native, she lived all over the country before realizing that home is back in Maine, and Western Maine is paradise. When not working she enjoys hiking, gardening, golf, and anything else in the great outdoors. She has three cats, but will not be a crazy cat lady until she has five of them.
Nurse
Anne McCandless joins the Gould community as a nurse in the Student Health Center. With nine years of experience in emergency and critical care nursing, she is excited for the change of pace caring for students at Gould. She is a passionate skier and has worked as a ski instructor at Sugarbush and Attitash and has patrolled both at Jay Peak and, for the last 5 years, at Sunday River. When the snow melts, Anne enjoys riding her road and mountain bikes. In the summer, she is an avid boater, sailor, and aspiring fisherwoman, both on the North Shore of Massachusetts and the Connecticut shore. She promises herself to start practicing the piano more, so be sure to remind her! She has moved from Bartlett, NH, to Newry with her son, Mac, and her partner, Henry.
