This week’s SPOTLIGHT features school nurse Marita Wiser P’10, ’12. Marita and her husband Bob live in Bridgton, Maine, and are the parents of two Gould graduates, Rosemary ’10 and Marguerite ’12. Rosemary, who is an RN herself, now works alongside Marita in the Gould Health Center. Marita is an avid hiker, and is the author of a coveted local hiking guide that outlines many popular destinations in the Western Mountains of Maine. The sixth edition of her guide, Hikes & Woodland Walks in and around Maine’s Lake Region, will be out this summer! Read on below to learn more about Marita!

Name: Marita Wiser

High school: North Branford HS (CT)

College/Grad School: Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in Boston and University of Southern Maine

What are your roles at Gould? RN – One of three school nurses, taking care of the health of our students.

Proudest Achievement: Well, this is not for all time, but just recently I was elected to moderate our town meeting, which was not a job I was seeking and it was a little daunting. But it was totally the Gould influence, to say OK, I will step out of my comfort zone, take a risk and try this. It worked out fine. I feel proud that I did it.

Last book I read: Light reading: the Paul Doiron series about a Maine game warden; on the serious side: The Big Rock Candy Mountain by Wallace Stegner

My soundtrack is: Irish and Newfoundland folk music resonates most

Movie I would recommend: The Post. I had another career in newspaper work, so this was right up my alley.

Favorite food: This time of year, rhubarb

Best advice I ever received: from a benediction:
Life is short-
And we do not have much time
to gladden the hearts of those who are on this journey with us.
So, be swift to love,
And make haste to be kind.

What’s the last thing you crossed off your bucket list?
Skating the Rideau Canal in Ottawa- 15.6 km round trip. So much fun!

Why Gould?
The people; the students and fellow employees are what has kept me coming back each year. It is a nice community to be part of. And the nursing work is interesting.

What are your interests/hobbies? Hiking, flower and vegetable gardening, canoeing, reading, traveling
